With high expectations heading into the 2017 season with murmurs of a deep playoff run, the Cowboys received word early Friday of the suspension of second-year running back Ezekiel Elliott for 6 games to start the season.
Though, Elliott is expected to appeal the suspension, the Cowboys are now left wondering what is to become if the suspension is upheld?
And, while the Cowboys do possess depth at the running back position with Elliott, Darren McFadden and Alfred Morris, along with fourth-string running back Rod Smith, the trio of ball handlers will be asked to step it up even more as to complement the arm of Dak Prescott and the receiving of Dez Bryant and Jason Witten.
Dallas ranked fifth in points scored last season with a potent offense that averaged 26.3 points per game along with a solid defense that allowed 19.1 points per game. But, now with the devastating news of losing a key part of their offense, will Dallas be able to come and stay together as a team in what will be a tough schedule ahead?
Smith and backup quarterback Kellen Moore were solid in their 20-18 victory over the Arizona Cardinals in last week’s Hall of Fame Game.
For the Rams, this will mark their second year in the City of Angels and while last season initially brought forth a lot of hype and hope, it quickly faded as Los Angeles was simply unable to put anything together on the offensive end leading to defeat after defeat.
After what was a disappointing 2016 campaign, changes came about in the way of the firing of head coach Jeff Fisher as he was replaced by 31-year old Sean MCVay.
Slated to be the starter will be second-year quarterback Jared Goff, who is coming off a rough rookie season in which he threw for 1089 yards but had a TD/INT ratio of 5:7. The Rams will be hoping Goff can find his way with the offense along with now third-year running back Todd Gurley.
Los Angeles picked up standout receiver Sammy Watkins from the Buffalo Bills in a trade and will be banking on his talents to help produce points in what was a weak offense.
With just an average of 14 points scored per game to 24.6 allowed, the Rams may be for another long season unless they can catch fire of the offensive end. For sports betting purposes for our US players, GTBets is favoring DAL (-3) points over LAR with an over/under of 37.0 total game points scored.
In keeping with the home team, I will favor the Rams PLUS the points (+3) over Dallas for the Week 1 win as my best betting pick.
