It’s been 10 long years since the Hokies last tasted the NCAA tourney and now back in the ‘Big Dance,’ they will be seeking the upset over a Wisconsin team that has won more games over their last three trips to March Madness with 11 than any other program.
At 22-10, the Hokies will be making their first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since 2007 and will rely on the tournament experience of Maryland transfer Seth Allen and his 13.4 points per game and South Florida transfer Zach LeDay and his team-leading points (16.3) and rebounds (7.4).
Hitting from beyond the 3-point arc with a 40.3 percent clip, the Hokies will use that weapon to spread the tough defense of the Badgers, who are one of the country’s best.
Wisconsin at 25-9 is no stranger to March Madness where they will be making their 19th consecutive appearance; fourth longest active streak.
The Badgers enter with plenty of experience with four seniors, including two who played in the national title game two years ago in forward Nigel Hayes and guard Bronson Koenig.
Off to a strong start at 21-3, the Badgers hit a rough patch when they lost five of six games but rallied to reach the Big Ten Championship; a game in which the lost 71-56 to Michigan.
Feeling a bit slighted with a No. 8 seed (their lowest in eight years), Wisconsin will be out to send a message to the rest of the field that they too have what it takes to cut down the nets at the end.
The winner of this contest will likely face the overall No. 1 seed in Villanova… the defending national champions.
Let’s see if the lower than expected seed given to Wisconsin gives the Badgers any additional motivation to take it to the Hokies, who may be happy to just be in the tournament? For betting purposes, one of our best sportsbetting sites such MyBookie is favoring WIS (-5.5) points over VT with an over/under of 137.0 total game points scored.
Expecting the Wisconsin defense to lock down the Hokie offense to pull away at the end, I will favor the Badgers MINUS the points (-5.5) over Virginia Tech for the win to advance as my betting pick.
