National Football League: Preseason Week 1 HOU vs. CAR
Houston Texans (0-0) at Carolina Panthers (0-0) August 9, 2017- 7:30 PM ET (TV NFL)
Bank of America Stadium, Charlotte, NC
With the Hall of Fame Game now out of the way, we will shift our attention for the next 4 weeks to preseason football. And to get it started for us in Week 1, the Houston Texans and Carolina Panthers will kick things off beginning on Wednesday night at Bank of America Stadium in a matchup that has the following betting lines from our best sportsbooks;
Best Texans Lines: MyBookie Spread (+1) ML “See Live Odds”
Best Panthers Lines: MyBookie Spread (-1) ML “See Live Odds”
Over/Under: GTBets 36.0
Coming off a disappointing 2016 season in which they went 6-10, the Panthers behind their franchise quarterback in Cam Newton will be seeking to get back to their dominating Super Bowl year of 2015.
For the Texans, they went 9-7 to make the postseason but were no match against eventual champion, the New England Patriots in a contest they lost 34-16.
Much of the Panthers success will be dependent on the arm and legs of Newton, who in 2016 threw for just over 3,500 yards with 19 touchdowns to 14 interceptions. But, with Newton coming off an offseason in which he underwent surgery on his rotator cuff, don’t expect to see their leader in uniform as he will ease himself back into football form.
With Newton out, that will open the door for backup Derek Anderson to see plenty of action behind center as he will aim to improve upon his play. Another player we can set our sights on will be first-round draft pick Christian McCaffrey, who is pened to be the running back of the future for Carolina.
On the Houston sidelines, new quarterback Tom Savage is pegged to be the starting signal caller as he is replacing Brock Osweiler, who spent just one season with the Texans after signing a big contract.
Another quarterback we will get a look at will be rookie Deshaun Watson, who has impressed in training camp and may “steal” the job away from Savage if he is unable to produce come the regular season.
Houston defensive star J.J. Watt is back after missing 13 games, but may or may not see brief action on Wednesday? Nothing more than easing their way into football shape, here is the best sports betting lines for our US players; MyBookie is favoring CAR (-1) point over HOU with an over/under of 36.0 total game points scored from GTBets.
In a game that can go either way, I will favor the home Panthers MINUS the point (-1) over Houston for the Week 1 preseason win as my best betting pick.
