After dropping a heartbreaker last Saturday on the road, the Broncos (1-1) will look to bounce back when they welcome in the Lobos (1-1), who are also coming off a tough loss to their in-state rival.
In a battle for state bragging rights, it was the Lobos who came up short to the New Mexico State Aggies by a 30-28 score. Trailing by as much as 30-5 going into the fourth quarter, New Mexico showed some fight storming back but came up short when they failed to convert on a two-point conversion in the final minute of the game.
The Lobos accounted for 430 yards of offense but the defense allowed 500 to the Aggies. New Mexico committed four turnovers to two for the Aggies which may have made the difference? Overall, the Lobos are averaging 33.0 points per game, while allowing 22.0.
One big question leading in for Thursday’s game is who will be under center for the Lobos as starting QB Lamar Jordan has struggled? Yanked in favor of backup Tevaka Tuioti as the team struggled, Tuioti shined in bringing back his team and may have won over the starting job versus the Broncos?
For Boise State, they will need a win to help shake off a tough loss to Washington State as we witnessed a thrilling slugfest that saw the Cougars outlast the Broncos 47-44 in a 3 overtime game. Even more bitter for BSU is that the Broncos blew a 21-point lead halfway through the fourth quarter.
Boise State as a whole was outgained 455-401 and lost the turnover battle 4-3. Also lost was QB Brett Rypien, who left the game early on with an injury that remains a mystery.
There is still no word on the availability of Rypien for Thursday, but will have complete confidence in Montell Mozart to help get the job done if needed. New Mexico has struggled early in the turnover department and don’t have the same running game we saw in 2016. For sports betting purposes for our US players, MyBookie is favoring BSU (-16.5) points over UNM with an over/under of 58.5 total game points scored.
Feeling too much on the Broncos side of the ball, I will favor the home team MINUS the points (-16.5) over New Mexico for the win as my best betting pick.
