Online Roulette: Time to Go Over the Inside Bets

    roulette betting

    Roulette is a great game for a lot of people. It is often associated with the glamorous aspects of the gaming experience. And it’s also a rather simple game. The playing decisions you have to make are not all that hard, and frankly, there isn’t a whole lot of strategy to deal with.

    Even so, there is something to be said for explaining how to go about playing roulette. There are a lot of different wagers you can make, and there are various payouts for them. If you understand how to make these bets, you’re going to get a whole lot more out of roulette.

    It should be noted that as we go through these, it is specifically for the “American” version of the game, in which the wheel includes both zero (0) and double zero (00). Not only do the online casinos at BetAnySports have both the American and European versions, but they also feature a number of variations which you are no doubt going to find very interesting.

    In the beginning, we cover what is known as the “Inside Bets in Roulette.”

    So what is an “inside” bet? Well, these are bets that are placed on specific numbers or combinations of numbers on a roulette table. Basically, they are placed “inside” the area on the layout where the numbers appear. Conversely, there are the “outside” bets, which are placed on the area of the payout that is OUTSIDE the numbers.

    Let’s get started, shall we?

    The Straight Bet

    Straight Bet is where the player will bet on any one individual number. If the number happens to hit, the payoff is 35 to 1. That means the player will bet on any number, from 1 to 36, or on the zero (0) or double zero (00), but ONLY that one number. The payoff here is 35 to 1, though the odds against winning on a single number straight bet are 37 to 1 in the American version of roulette (the European version will be dealt with separately). Obviously, this is going to create an advantage on the part of the casino, though less than there would be in some other games. The following formula explains the advantage in terms of the player’s percentage expectation:

    Expectation (E) = [(% chance of winning) X (amount won)] + [(% chance of losing) X (-amount lost)]

    …..which is translated to:

    E = [(1/38) X (35)] + [(37/38) X (-1)] = 35/38 + (-37/38) = -2/38 = -1/19 = -.0526 = -5.26%

    By way of this formula, the player can determine that he or she is at a 5.26% disadvantage against the house.

    Play it “straight,” and you’ll know the ins and outs.

    The Street Bet

    The Street Bet is an “inside bet.” And remember, these are bets that are placed on specific numbers or combinations of numbers on a roulette table. Basically, they are placed “inside” the area on the layout where the numbers appear.

    When you have three numbers in a row across the table, this is known collectively as a “street” in the game of roulette. When a player makes a “street” bet, he is covering three numbers in a row. If any of these numbers hit on the next spin, the player wins. The odds of winning this bet are 3 in 38, or 7.9%, which works out to actual odds of 12.66 to 1. The payout on the bet is 11 to 1.

    Here is the formula calculating house edge:

    Expectation (E) = [(% chance of winning) X (amount won)] + [(% chance of losing) X (-amount lost)]

    E = [(3/38) X (11)] + [(35/38) X (-1)] = 33/38 + (-35/38) = -2/38 = -1/19 = -.0526 = -5.26%

    So now you’ll have some more “streets smarts” at the roulette table.

    The Double Street Bet

    The Double Street Bet is another “inside bet.” So like the previous ones we talked about, these are “inside” the area on the layout where the numbers appear. The Double Street Bet essentially covers DOUBLE the territory of the street bet (hence the tag “double street”), meaning that it covers six numbers rather than three (which would be the normal “street” bet). This is also referred to in some places as a six-number bet, or a “line” bet. It is placed at an outside line at the intersection of two rows of numbers. The odds of winning this bet are 6 in 38, or 15.8%, with actual odds of 5.33 to 1. The double street bet pays at a rate of 5 to 1.

    This is the expectation as it breaks down for this particular wager:

    Expectation (E) = [(% chance of winning) X (amount won)] + [(% chance of losing) X (-amount lost)]

    E = [(6/38) X (5)] + [(32/38) X (-1)] = 30/38 + (-32/38) = -2/38 = -1/19 = -.0526 = -5.26%

    Remember when your mother told you to look on both sides of the street? Well, here it’s extra important to heed that advice, especially when you’ve got money on the table.

    The Split Bet

    The Split Bet is – you guessed it – another “inside bet.” And it’s a little different than the others, so take note of the procedure and the payout.

    SPLIT BET — In this particular instance the player places a wager between two numbers; that is to say that it is theoretically placed on a line that falls between those numbers, and in that way it covers both of the numbers. The house will pay off the player making the wager if either of the numbers comes up, and that payoff will be at a rate of 17 to 1. The actual odds of the Split Bet winning are two out of 38, or 1 in 19, which is 18 to 1.

    Now, let’s go over the mathematical breakdown on the Split Bet, as it represents the house edge:

    Expectation (E) = [(% chance of winning) X (amount won)] + [(% chance of losing) X (-amount lost)]

    E = [(2/38) X (17)] + [(36/38) X (-1)] = 34/38 + (-36/38) = -2/38 = -1/19 = -.0526 = -5.26%

    There’s just one thing we ask – if you lose this bet, please don’t develop a “split” personality!
