The University of Glendale Stadium will be the site of what will be another exciting day of basketball as four teams will do battle with two advancing to play for it all on Monday. Tipping if off for us on Saturday afternoon will be a South Carolina (26-10) team playing the role of underdog… albeit a gutty one as they will seek to pull off the upset over a Gonzaga squad that once too played that same role.
With both teams having already punched their ticket for their first ever Final Four, they will both now seek to continue their dream of making it to Monday’s National Championship.
South Carolina will enter as (+7) point underdogs to the Zags, but make no mistake they are far from being billed as a Cinderella as they are coming out of the SEC; a conference that knows plenty well about winning championships.
In what was a surprising twist for the Gamecocks, who entered tournament play having lost five of their final seven, they put it all together behind the hot shooting of senior guard Sindarius Thornwell and “buckle-down in your face defense” to defeat Duke, Baylor and Florida in the East Region.
Seeking to offset the Gamecocks and their stellar defense, the Zags (36-1) will counter with their size in 7-foot, 300-pound Przemek Karnowski, 7-foot freshman sensation Zach Collins and 6-9 forward Johnathan Williams. However, it is point guard Nigel Williams-Goss that makes it all go with his ball-handling.
South Carolina will rally behind SEC Player of the Year in Thornwell, who is averaging 25.8 points per game to try to break down the size and athleticism of the Bulldogs.
Behind their stingy defense and ability to turn it on in the second half of games, will the Gamecocks be able to muster enough to take out the top-seeded Bulldogs? For sportsbetting purposes for our US players, BetOnline is favoring GONZ (-7) points over SC with an over/under of 138.0 total game points scored from 5Dimes.
While I am leaning on the Zags to win outright, I will favor the Gamecocks PLUS the points (+7) to cover the spread against Gonzaga as my betting pick.
