#23 Texas Longhorns (0-0) at Maryland Terrapins (0-0)
September 1, 2018- 12:00 PM ET (TV FS1) FedExField, Landover, MD
Mired in turmoil, will the Maryland Terrapins be able to focus their attention on the No. 23-ranked Texas Longhorns who make their way into FedExField for a high noon showdown on Saturday that has the following betting lines from our college football odds page;
Following a 33-16 bowl win last year over Missouri to end the season at 7-6, Texas with their strong fan base will be expecting even more as they enter the 2018 season on the road behind second-year head coach Tom Herman. Back under center will be QB Sam Ehlinger, who is surrounded by enough talent in the backfield and the wideout positions to make some serious noise on the offensive end but will need to improve taking care of the football.
Impressive on the defensive side of the ball last season, let’s see what the Longhorns can do in stopping opposing teams as they have lost some playmakers on that side but still have some playmakers.
Winners of four of their last six season openers, Texas will want to get a big road win under their belt as they will seek to make a strong push in the always tough Big 12.
Coming off a four win season and with just 13 victories over their last 3 seasons, the Terps enter the new season with plenty of distractions in the sudden death of a player during practice and reports of a “toxic culture” led by head coach D.J. Durkin.
How the Maryland players will respond once on the field remains to be seen but they will need to be ready for a Texas team seeking to make a statement on the road. One of the worst performing offensive teams in 2017, the Terrapins will return all five of their starting offensive lineman which should help bring some stability to the offense.
The defense will be anchored by pass rusher Jesse Aniebonam, who returns after missing all of last season. This should be a much improved year for the Terps who find themselves in a tough Big Ten Conference.
Maryland can build some confidence with a strong showing despite the distractions and underdog tag, but will need to be ready for the Longhorns best shot or this will be a long game for Terrapin fans. For this TEX vs. MD matchup from our best sportsbooks, BetNow is favoring the Horns (-13.5) points over Maryland, while MyBookie is giving the home team (+14) points.
GTBets has the Over/Under set with 53.0 total game points scored. Keeping my confidence in this Texas squad, I will favor the Longhorns MINUS the points (-13.5) to cover the spread over Maryland as my best betting pick.
